Proportional Counter

A proportional counter is a type of radiation detector that measures the intensity of ionizing radiation. It operates on the principle of gas amplification, where the radiation ionizes gas molecules which are then collected and amplified to produce an observable signal.

In its most common form, a proportional counter consists of a gas-filled tube with a central wire anode and a cylindrical cathode surrounding it.
