Parliamentary Republic

Definition

A parliamentary republic is a form of government where the executive branch derives its legitimacy from and is accountable to the parliament. It combines elements of both parliamentary democracy and republicanism.

Sense 1: Political System

In a parliamentary republic, the head of state is usually a president or a monarch with limited powers, while the head of government is the prime minister or another elected official. The government is accountable to the parliament, and the legislative and executive branches are separate.

Example sentence: In a parliamentary republic, the president is a figurehead while the prime minister holds the real power.

Sense 2: Popular Concept

Outside of its purely political sense, a parliamentary republic can also refer more generally to a country governed by a parliamentary system and where the people hold power through elected representatives.

Example sentence: Many citizens prefer living in a parliamentary republic because it promotes transparency and accountability in the government.
