Onchocerciasis is a parasitic disease caused by infection with the nematode worm Onchocerca volvulus. The disease is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected blackflies, primarily of the Simulium genus. Onchocerciasis is also known as river blindness, as it is commonly found in regions near fast-flowing rivers and streams.
