Kepler's Law

Kepler's Law, also known as Kepler's laws of planetary motion, are three fundamental laws that describe the motion of planets around the sun. These laws were formulated by the German astronomer Johannes Kepler in the early 17th century.

Senses

Sense 1: Kepler's First Law

Kepler's first law, also called the law of ellipses, states that the path of each planet around the sun is in the shape of an ellipse with the sun at one of its foci.

Example sentence: According to Kepler's first law, Earth's orbit around the sun is an ellipse, with the sun located at one of the foci.

Sense 2: Kepler's Second Law

Kepler's second law, also called the law of equal areas, states that a line connecting a planet to the sun sweeps out equal areas in equal periods of time, meaning a planet moves faster when it is nearer to the sun and slower when it is farther away.

Example sentence: Kepler's second law explains why planets move faster in their orbits when they are closer to the sun.

Sense 3: Kepler's Third Law

Kepler's third law, also known as the law of harmonies, describes the relationship between the period of a planet's orbit and its distance from the sun. The square of the period is proportional to the cube of the average distance between the planet and the sun.

Example sentence: By applying Kepler's third law, scientists can determine the relative distances between planets in our solar system.
