Definitions from the Web

Fumagine

Description:

Fumagine, also known as sooty mold, is a black, powdery fungal growth that develops on the surface of plants, especially on leaves and stems. It is caused by certain insects, such as aphids or scale insects, that excrete a sugary substance called honeydew on which the fungus grows. Fumagine does not directly harm the plant, but can block sunlight from reaching the leaves, reducing photosynthesis and possibly weakening the plant.

Examples:

Noun:

  • The plant's leaves were covered in fumagine, making them appear black and sooty.
  • The fumagine on the stems of the rose bush was a result of an aphid infestation.

Verb:

  • The insects' honeydew attracted the fungus, causing the leaves to fumagine.
  • Without proper pest control, the garden plants may fumagine due to infestations.
